West Side Story 1961(Film Review)♡

West Side Story is a 1961 musical film, which is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name, which was inspired by William Shakespeare’s play ”Romeo & Juliet.”
The lyrics were by Stephen Soundheim.
The film was good, as I watched it yesterday for the first time. And revolves around two gangs: ”The Jets”  and a Puerto- Rican gang ”The Sharks”.  The leader of the gang for ”The Jets” is Riff. Whereas, the leader for ”The Sharks” is Bernardo, they get into a fight which is interrupted and stopped by officer Krupke.
They either have to pay if they don’t stop, which they reluctantly both agree too. However, the Jets decide to challenge the Sharks to a rumble at an upcoming dance.
Riff decides to persuade his best friend Tony, who was the co-founder of the gang, but ultimately left to fight, however Tony’s uninterested and tells Riff that he senses something good will come.

Bernardo (leader of the Sharks) has a younger sister called Maria. Who’s excited about the dance, and expresses her joy to Anita(Bernardo’s girlfriend).

At the dance, the gangs and the girls refuse to intermingle, and somehow Tony arrives and Maria meet whilst dancing still occurs and begins to feel like a fantasy world. They immediately fall in love, but are ordered to stay away from one another by Maria’s older brother (Bernardo).

You should find out the rest of what happens, when watching the movie.

I love musicals, and this was one of the musicals I wanted to watch:)

Rating 8/10.

Thank you,
Lizzy 🙂
